We often forget what our purpose is as Christians. Our purpose is to follow Jesus and only Him. God does not promise us a white picket fence, and he doesn’t promise us a life of earthly prosperity. Do you know what He promises you? He promises you a life of hardship.
David says in Psalms, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for you are with me… You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.”
I have forgotten. I have forgotten that my entirely life is to be dedicated to the work of Christ, I have forgotten that my life is to be a testimony of the goodness of Jesus. I believe that in the western world, it is so easy for us to forget that Christianity doesn’t offer us a white picket fence. David said, “Even though I WALK through the valley of the shadow of death.” David doesn’t say he walks around it; he says He walks through it. I want to encourage you that you will not stay on the Mountain Top and you shouldn’t stay on the Mountain Top. Even Moses had to come down off of the Mountain. When we face hardships we need to remember that God is with us in the midst. I love when the verse says; “You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies.” Notice how in the passage, it doesn’t say that God leads us out of the Valley. It says that in the Valley, in the presence of our pain and suffering, God prepares a table for us. In the Valley, God will not leave you nor will He forsake you, but He will ask you to sit in the Valley and to stay for a while. This life is not our own, and we are foolish to think that we can control our lives and set our paths before us. Proverbs 16:9 says, “Man choses His path but God directs His footsteps.” The reality is, God loves us too much to not teach us and to not lead us. God will never let go of you. A song called, “Take Courage” has been in my heart, and it says, “Slow down, take time, breathe in. The thoughts in His mind are always higher than mine. Take courage my heart, stay steadfast my soul. He is in the waiting, He is never failing.”
Do you know what our true purpose is? It is to be in the presence of Jesus. We are not living for this earthly Kingdom. We are living for a heavenly Kingdom. “But our Citizenship is in Heaven and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ…” (Philippians 3:20)
